CBX Turbos
See Your Four and Raise You Another Two!
In 1979 it was fun to run around on a CBX...Sort of like a sewing machine running on Nitro. Guys used to buy them and then crash them in the first 5 minutes. Fast revving animals that we built exhaust systems for and turbocharged. We used Rajay B22 Turbos and IHI Turbochargers. We even made a few twin turbo CBX's with two RH05 turbochargers fueled by a big 2" SU Carburetor.
We also designed some 6 into 2 exhausts for our friend, the late Russ Collins, who owned RC Engineering. Russ wanted a cross-over tube and Terry Vance, his general manager, did not... but that's a long story. We hot-wired Russ' CBX and did 3000 miles of "testing" before we drove the bike back to RC without any baffles and the cops in pursuit. RCBX was the license plate.
CBXs: Cams
broke, rods were weak, brushes in the alternator died. A few
years
later they turned white with saddlebags and they died. Always
fun to
pull up to a light and watch the dude in the car count the
exhaust
pipes and see his mouth say "Six!".
We built Single (Rajay B22) and Twin
Turbo systems (Two IHI RH05).
In 1980 the late Bob McClure, founder of BAE turbo kit business, contacted us as he could not get his draw through CBX Turbo to carburate...We installed a SU Carb that we modified and it passed his emission lab bag test routine. He later died in plane crash.
One
of our customers, John Molson (Yes, the Beer Company) actually
outran a
police helicopter with one of our turbos (above)...John lost
visual
contact at 150 mph then hid under a tree and reversed his
course. He
was quite an athlete, a
good rider, and a lot of fun. John used to slide the CBX Turbo
around
Mulholland Drive and up and down Stunt Canyon at warp drive.
He's now driving a brace of Range
Rover
Discoveries. The memories persist however, clear as yesterday!.
He
survived the CBX and moved on. John contacted us recently and we
reminisced about how his mother Claire found out he had the bike
from F1's
Walter Wolf...and then there was us racing John, both on CBX'es,
on the 405 and Marina
Freeway on the way to eat Alaskan Crabs at the Enterprise Fish
Company
in Santa Monica, splitting cars at 130 mph.
We don't make turbos for these
anymore, so don't ask...
Calvin Klein has nothing on Jim Hall...Obsession
Jim married this bike more than 30 years ago and they still go out together. This damn bike has been in and out of our shop for bigger headers, turbo dump pipes, etc. for the last 15 years. Gotta admire anyone who stays with a project. The 2004 rendition with new bodywork pictured above. Jim fools with Corvettes these days.
Jim just can't leave things alone...2016 upgrades. Something to keep his bike ahead of his Corvettes.
